Let A be a noetherian ring, M a finitely generated A-module, a a subset of A stable under addition and multiplication, q1,...,qm prime ideals of A not containing a, and r≥1 an integer such that
codim(V(a)∩Supp(M),Supp(M))≥r.
There exists a sequence (x1,...,xr) of elements of a, belonging to none of the ideals q1,...,qm, and such that the sequence (x1/1,...,xr/1) of elements of Ap is secant for the Ap-module Mp, for every prime ideal p∈V(a)∩Supp(M).
We reason by induction on r. Suppose first that r=1, and let Φ be the (finite) set of minimal elements of Supp(M). We argue by contradiction and suppose that there exists no element x1 of a satisfying the conditions of the statement. Let x∈a, not belonging to q1∪...∪qm. By hypothesis there exists an element p of V(a)∩Supp(M) such that the image x/1 of x in Ap is not secant for Mp. Let Ψ be the set of ideals q∈Φ contained in p; then the minimal elements of Supp(Mp) are the prime ideals qAp of Ap, where q runs through Ψ. By Prop. 3 of No. 2, there therefore exists an element q of Ψ such that x/1∈qAp, whence x∈q. In other words, we have a⊂q1∪...∪qm∪⋃q∈Φq. Since a⊂qj for 1≤j≤m, Prop. 2 of II, § 1, No. 1 proves the existence of an element q of Φ containing a, whence
V(q)⊂V(a)∩Supp(M).
Since V(a) contains an irreducible component of Supp(M), this contradicts the hypothesis
codim(V(a)∩Supp(M),Supp(M))≥1.
Suppose now that r≥2. By the induction hypothesis, one can find a sequence (x1,...,xr−1) of elements of a, not belonging to q1∪...∪qm, and such that, for every p∈V(a)∩Supp(M), the sequence (x1/1,...,xr−1/1) of elements of Ap is secant for Mp. Put N=M/∑i=1r−1xiM. It is enough to construct an element xr of a not belonging to q1∪...∪qm and such that, for every p∈V(a)∩Supp(M), the element xr/1 of Ap is secant for Np. By the first part of the proof, it is enough to establish the two relations
V(a)∩Supp(M)=V(a)∩Supp(N),
codim(V(a)∩Supp(N),Supp(N))≥1.
Now one has
Supp(N)=V(x1)∩...∩V(xr−1)∩Supp(M)
m=r−1,X=Supp(M),Y=V(α)∩Supp(N),Hi=V(xi)
whence X′=Supp(N).
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
