Commutative Algebra, chapter VIII, § 5. Anneaux locaux réguliers
Let be a noetherian local ring, a sequence of elements of and the ideal generated by . The following conditions are equivalent:
(i) the ring is regular, and forms part of a system of coordinates of ; (ii) the ring is regular and is a secant sequence for ; (iii) the ring is regular and is a completely secant sequence for .
Moreover, when these conditions are satisfied, is a prime ideal of .
(iii) (ii): this follows from the corollary of Prop. 3 of § 3, No. 2.
(ii) (i): suppose that is a secant sequence for and that the noetherian local ring is regular. Let be a sequence of elements of whose classes modulo form a system of coordinates of . Then the sequence generates the ideal of , and we have
It follows that is regular and that is a system of coordinates of .
(i) (iii): if condition (i) is satisfied, the sequence is completely secant (No. 2, Th. 1), hence secant by the corollary of Prop. 3 of § 3, No. 2. We therefore have
(3)
moreover, the classes of modulo are linearly independent over the field , and therefore we have
(4)
Formulas (3) and (4) show that is regular.
Every regular noetherian local ring is an integral domain by Cor. 1 of Th. 1 of No. 2. It follows that is prime if is regular.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
