Commutative Algebra, chapter VIII, § 7. Multiplicités

Suppose A semi-local, and let ρ:A→B\rho : A \to B be a ring homomorphism making B a finitely generated A-module. Let N be a nonzero finitely generated B-module, and let q be an ideal of A contained in the radical of A, such that N/qNN/qN is of finite length. Among the maximal ideals of B (finite in number, by IV, § 2, No. 5, cor. 3 to prop. 9), let us denote by m1,...,mrm_1, ..., m_r those for which one has dim⁡Bmi(Nmi)=dim⁡B(N)\dim_{B_{m_i}}(N_{m_i}) = \dim_B(N). Put Bi=BmiB_i = B_{m_i} and qi=qBiq_i = qB_i for 1≤i≤r1 \leq i \leq r. Then one has the equalities

dim⁡A(N)=dim⁡B(N), \dim_A(N) = \dim_B(N),
eqBB(N)=∑i=1reqiBi(Nmi), e_{qB}^B(N) = \sum_{i=1}^r e_{q_i}^{B_i}(N_{m_i}),
eqA(N)=∑i=1r[B/mi:A/ρ−1(mi)] eqiBi(Nmi). e_q^A(N) = \sum_{i=1}^r [B/m_i : A/\rho^{-1}(m_i)]\ e_{q_i}^{B_i}(N_{m_i}).

The first equality follows from § 2, No. 3, th. 1, c); the second follows from Remark 4 of No. 1 (note that mim_i belongs to V(qB)V(qB) for 1≤i≤r1 \leq i \leq r since ρ−1(mi)⊃q\rho^{-1}(m_i) \supset q by V, § 2, No. 1, prop. 1). Let us prove the third equality. Let E be a B-module of finite length; one has

long⁡A(E)=∑m[B/m:A/ρ−1(m)].long⁡Bm(Em), \operatorname{long}_A(E) = \sum_m [B/m : A/\rho^{-1}(m)].\operatorname{long}_{B_m}(E_m),

mm ranging over the set of maximal ideals of B; this is in fact evident when E is one of the B/mB/m, and the general case follows from this, since E possesses a composition series whose quotients are isomorphic to B/mB/m. Applying this formula to the B-modules N/qn+1NN/q^{n+1}N, one deduces the required equality by definition of the multiplicities.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
