Commutative Algebra, chapter IX, § 1. Vecteurs de Witt

Let us take up again the notations of the remark of No. 3. Let AA be a ring. If aa and bb are elements of AJA^J and r=(rj)j∈Jr = (r_j)_{j \in J} is an element of AJA^J, we denote by rA(a,b)r_A(a, b) the element (rj(a,b))j∈J(r_j(a, b))_{j \in J} of AJA^J. Let us denote by U(A)U(A) the set AJA^J endowed with the composition laws sAs_A and pAp_A. One can show (p. 52, Exercise 35) that, endowed with the addition sAs_A and the multiplication pAp_A, U(A)U(A) is a (commutative) ring; it is called the universal Witt ring of AA. The identity element for the addition is the element of U(A)U(A) all of whose components are zero; the identity element for the multiplication is the element of U(A)U(A) all of whose components are zero except that of index 1 which is equal to 1A1_A; the opposite of an element aa of U(A)U(A) is iA(a)i_A(a). The mapping φA\varphi_A is a ring homomorphism of U(A)U(A) into the product ring AJA^J.

Let ρ:B→A\rho : B \to A be a ring homomorphism; we denote by U(ρ)U(\rho) the mapping from BJB^J into AJA^J which associates with the element (bj)j∈J(b_j)_{j \in J} of BJB^J the element (ρ(bj))j∈J(\rho(b_j))_{j \in J} of AJA^J. One can show (loc. cit.) that U(ρ)U(\rho) is a ring homomorphism of U(B)U(B) into U(A)U(A).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
