Commutative Algebra, chapter IX, § 1. Vecteurs de Witt
Let A be a field of characteristic p. The ring is a separated and complete integral local ring, with maximal ideal and residue field isomorphic to A. If the field A is perfect, the ring is a discrete valuation ring, and its maximal ideal is .
The homomorphism defines an isomorphism of onto (no 7, example 1). The ideal of is therefore maximal. Since the ring is separated and complete for the -adic topology (prop. 6, ), it is a local ring, with maximal ideal (III, § 2, no 13, prop. 19).
Let and be two nonzero elements of . There exist integers and , and elements and of such that , and that the elements and of are nonzero. Then the component of index of is equal to the component of index 0 of (formula (53)), that is to say to (formula (51) and No. 3, Example 2). Consequently is nonzero and is an integral domain.
If the field is perfect, the maximal ideal of is equal to (Prop. 7, b)) and consequently W(A) is a discrete valuation ring (VI, § 3, No. 6, Prop. 9, c)).
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
