Commutative Algebra, chapter IX, § 4. Fermeture intégrale d'un anneau local complet
Let be a semi-local noetherian ring. The following conditions are equivalent: (i) is a Nagata ring; (ii) for every prime ideal of , the -algebra is separable; (iii) for every reduced -algebra , the ring is reduced. Let us first prove the equivalence of conditions (ii) and (iii). The implication (iii) (ii) is trivial; conversely, suppose that satisfies condition (ii). Then, for every -algebra which is a field, the ring is reduced. Let now be a reduced -algebra of finite type; the ring , being noetherian, is isomorphic to a subring of a finite product of fields (IV, § 2, No. 5, Prop. 10); since is flat over , the ring is isomorphic to a subring of the reduced ring , hence is reduced. Finally, let be any reduced -algebra; then is the union of the filtered family of its subalgebras of finite type, and is the direct limit of the filtered family of reduced rings, hence is reduced. Let us show that (ii) implies (i). Let be a prime ideal of ; the field of fractions of the ring is identified with , and the -algebra is identified with , hence with . If is a separable -algebra, the ring is Japanese (No. 2, Prop. 3). Let us prove the implication (i) (ii) by induction on . It is obvious if since then is artinian, hence complete. Let be an integer ; consider the following assumption:
(R)
Let be a semi-local noetherian Nagata ring of dimension , let be a prime ideal of and a finite extension of the field ; it is enough to prove,
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
