Let A be a noetherian local ring and M a nonzero finitely generated A-module of finite injective dimension. Then diA(M)=prof(A).
Put r=diA(M). We have ExtAi(κA,M)=0 for i>r, hence ExtAr(κA,M)=0 by Proposition 6 of No. 3, (iv) ⇒ (i). Let s be the depth of A and let (x1,…,xs) be an A-regular sequence of elements of mA (§ 1, No. 4, Theorem 2); put N=A/(x1A+…+xsA). By the example of No. 1, we have dpA(N)=s and ExtAs(N,M)=0, hence s≤diA(M)=r. But N is of depth 0 (§ 1, No. 4, Proposition 7), hence there exists an exact sequence of A-modules
0→κA→N→N′→0.
From this one deduces an exact sequence of extension modules
ExtAr(N,M)→ExtAr(κA,M)→ExtAr+1(N′,M);
since ExtAr+1(N′,M)=0 and ExtAr(κA,M)=0, one obtains ExtAr(N,M)=0, whence r≤dpA(N)=s. In the end, we have r=s, which completes the proof.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
