Algebra, chapter IX, § 2. Discriminant d'une forme sesquilinéaire
Let A be a field, B a commutative algebra of finite dimension n over A, and S a basis of B. In order that B be separable (chap. VIII, § 7, No. 5, def. 1), it is necessary and sufficient that one have .
Indeed, let be the algebraic closure of A, and let be the algebra over . If B is separable, is semisimple (chap. VIII, § 7, No. 5, cor. of prop. 7) and is therefore the direct sum of n fields isomorphic to (chap. VIII, § 6, No. 4, cor. of prop. 9). If denotes the canonical basis of (identified with ), one has , whence (prop. 1) and (formula (6)).
Conversely suppose that one has . To prove that B is separable, it is enough to prove that is semisimple, that is to say that it admits no nonzero nilpotent element. Now, if were a nonzero nilpotent element of , it could be taken as the first element of a basis of , and one would then have for every since a nilpotent endomorphism has its eigenvalues zero (chap. VII, § 5, No. 3, cor. 3 of prop. 8), and hence a zero trace. It would follow that , whence (prop. 1) and (formula (6)), contrary to the assumption.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
