Let Φ be an A-bilinear form on E, and K a subring of A such that A is a K-module free of finite dimension q. If (ei)i=1,…,n is a basis of E over A and (aj)j=1,…,q a basis of A over K, then (ajei) is a basis of E over K. The mapping Φ′ of E×E into K defined by Φ′(x,y)=TrA/K(Φ(x,y)) is a K-bilinear form on E, and one has
(8)DΦ′(ajei)=NA/K(DΦ(e1,…,en))⋅(DA/K(a1,…,aq))n.
The first two assertions being evident, it is enough to prove (7). By definition the first member is the determinant of the K-linear endomorphism u of E defined by
u(ajei)=r,s∑TrA/K(ajarΦ(ei,es))ares.
Consider the A-linear endomorphism v of E defined by v(ei)=∑sΦ(ei,es)es, and the K-linear endomorphism w of E defined by w(ajei)=(∑rTrA/K(ajar)ar)ei. We have
w(v(ajei))=w(s∑ajΦ(ei,es)es)=r,s∑TrA/K(ajΦ(ei,es)ar)ares
since w(aes)=∑rTrA/K(aar)ares for all a∈A; thus u is the composite mapping w∘v. Therefore, denoting by vK the mapping v considered as a K-linear mapping, we have det(u)=det(vK)det(w). Now det(vK)=NA/K(det(v)) (chap. VIII, § 12, no 2, prop. 7), and it is clear that det(v)=DΦ(e1,…,en). On the other hand, since each of the A-modules Aei(i=1,…,n) is stable under w, and the determinant of the restriction of w to Aei is det(TrA/K(ajar))=DA/K(a1,…,aq), we have det(w)=(DA/K(a1,…,aq))n. Formula (8) therefore reduces to det(u)=det(vK)det(w), a formula proved above.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
