Algebra, chapter IX, § 5. Propriétés spéciales aux formes bilinéaires alternées

Let RR be an alternating matrix of even order 2m2m over a commutative ring AA, and let PP be a square matrix of order 2m2m over AA. We have

(7) Pf(tP.R.P)=(det⁡P)Pf(R).\mathrm{Pf}({}^t P . R . P) = (\det P) \mathrm{Pf}(R).

Indeed, suppose first that AA is a field of characteristic 0 and put R=(αij),P=(βst)R = (\alpha_{ij}), P = (\beta_{st}). Associate with RR the bivector

u=∑i<jαijei∧ej=12∑1≤i,j≤2mαijei∧ej u = \sum_{i < j} \alpha_{ij} e_i \wedge e_j = \frac{1}{2} \sum_{1 \leq i, j \leq 2m} \alpha_{ij} e_i \wedge e_j

of ⋀2A2m\bigwedge^2 \mathbf{A}^{2m}, where (ei)(e_i) denotes the canonical basis of A2m\mathbf{A}^{2m}; consider tP{}^t P as the matrix, with respect to the basis (ei)(e_i), of an endomorphism ff of A2m\mathbf{A}^{2m}. Then the bivector (⋀f)(u)(\bigwedge f)(u) is associated with the matrix tP.R.P{}^t P . R . P since it is equal to 12∑i,j,s,tβisαijβjtes∧et\frac{1}{2} \sum_{i, j, s, t} \beta_{is} \alpha_{ij} \beta_{jt} e_s \wedge e_t. Since the extension ⋀f\bigwedge f of ff to the exterior algebra ⋀A2m\bigwedge \mathbf{A}^{2m} is an endomorphism of this algebra (chap. III, § 5, no 9), we have ⋀((⋀f)(u))=(⋀f)(⋀u)\bigwedge ((\bigwedge f)(u)) = (\bigwedge f)(\bigwedge u); since ⋀f\bigwedge f is the homothety of ratio det⁡f\det f, it follows therefore from (6) and def. 1, that we have m!Pf(tP.R.P)=m!(det⁡P)Pf(R)m! \mathrm{Pf}({}^t P . R . P) = m! (\det P) \mathrm{Pf}(R), whence (7) in the case under consideration. The general case follows by observing that the two members of (7) are polynomials with integer coefficients in the elements of the matrices RR and PP (chap. IV, § 2, no 5, Scholium).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
