Algebra, chapter IX, § 7. Formes hermitiennes et corps ordonnés

A hermitian form Φ\Phi on EE is said to be positive (resp. negative) if Φ(x,x)⩾0\Phi(x, x) \geqslant 0 (resp. Φ(x,x)⩽0\Phi(x, x) \leqslant 0) for every x∈Ex \in E.

When A=KA = K, one also says that the quadratic form

Q(x)=12Φ(x,x) Q(x) = \frac{1}{2} \Phi(x, x)
associated with Φ\Phi is positive (resp. negative).

Suppose EE is finite-dimensional over AA, and let (ei)(e_i) (i=1,…,ni = 1, \ldots, n) be an orthogonal basis of EE (§6§ 6, no 1, th. 1). For a hermitian form Φ\Phi on EE to be positive, it is necessary and sufficient that Φ(ei,ei)⩾0\Phi(e_i, e_i) \geqslant 0 for i=1,…,ni = 1, \ldots, n. Let Φ\Phi be a positive non-degenerate hermitian form on EE; since every positive element of KK is a square, hence of the form ρρ‾\rho \overline{\rho} (ρ∈A\rho \in A), there exist orthonormal bases for Φ\Phi in EE (§6§ 6, no 1, cor. 1 of th. 1).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
