Algebra, chapter IX, § 7. Formes hermitiennes et corps ordonnés

Let Φ\Phi be a positive hermitian form on EE. For x,yx, y in EE, one has

Φ(x,y)Φ(x,y)‾⩽Φ(x,x)Φ(y,y). \Phi(x, y) \overline{\Phi(x, y)} \leqslant \Phi(x, x) \Phi(y, y).

The inequality is indeed immediate when the vectors xx and yy are proportional. We may therefore suppose that xx and yy are linearly independent. Let A′A' be the (commutative) subfield K(Φ(x,y))K(\Phi(x, y)) of AA, FF the vector plane over A′A' generated by xx and yy, and ΦF\Phi_F the restriction of Φ\Phi to FF; the latter takes its values in A′A'. By Proposition 1, the discriminant of ΦF\Phi_F with respect to the basis (x,y)(x, y) is ⩾0\geqslant 0. Now this discriminant is Φ(x,x)Φ(y,y)−Φ(x,y)Φ(x,y)‾\Phi(x, x)\Phi(y, y) - \Phi(x, y)\overline{\Phi(x, y)}. Q.E.D.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
