Algebra, chapter IX, § 7. Formes hermitiennes et corps ordonnés

*Suppose E finite-dimensional and A commutative (A=K\mathbf{A} = \mathbf{K} or A=K(i)\mathbf{A} = \mathbf{K}(i)). Let Φ\Phi be a hermitian form on E, X its matrix with respect to a basis (xj)(x_j) (j=1,…,nj = 1, \ldots, n) of E; for every subset H of {1,n}\{1, n\}, denote by XH,HX_{H, H} the minor of X obtained by deleting the rows and columns with indices j∉Hj \notin H (Chap. III, § 6, No. 3).

a) *If Φ\Phi is positive non-degenerate, then XH,H>0X_{H, H} > 0 for every subset H of {1,n}\{1, n\}.

b) *Conversely, if, on putting Hj={1,j}H_j = \{1, j\}, we have XHj,Hj>0X_{H_j, H_j} > 0 for j=1,…,nj = 1, \ldots, n, then Φ\Phi is positive non-degenerate.

Suppose first that Φ\Phi is positive non-degenerate. The elements (xj)(x_j) (j∈Hj \in H) form a basis of a subspace F of E, and the minor XH,HX_{H, H} is the discriminant of the restriction ΦF\Phi_F of Φ\Phi to F with respect to this basis; now, since ΦF(x,x)>0\Phi_F(x, x) > 0 for every x≠0x \neq 0 in F, ΦF\Phi_F is positive non-degenerate (Corollary to Proposition 2); hence XH,H>0X_{H, H} > 0 (Proposition 1). To prove b), let us note that, with the notation of Proposition 1, § 6, No. 1, the minor XHj,HjX_{H_j, H_j} is equal to Dj+1,j+1D_{j+1, j+1}; there therefore exists (Proposition 1, § 6, No. 1) an orthogonal basis (ej)(e_j) (j=1,…,nj = 1, \ldots, n) of E such that Φ(ej,ej)>0\Phi(e_j, e_j) > 0 for j=1,…,nj = 1, \ldots, n; consequently Φ\Phi is positive non-degenerate.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
