Algebra, chapter IX, § 7. Formes hermitiennes et corps ordonnés

One assumes that A=KA = K or A=K(i)A = K(i). Let RR be a hermitian matrix of order nn over AA; one says that RR has signature (s,t)(s, t) if the hermitian form on AnA^n having RR as matrix with respect to the canonical basis, has signature (s,t)(s, t). Let Δk\Delta_k denote the principal minor of RR obtained by deleting in RR the rows and columns of index >k> k; one assumes that Δs+t≠0\Delta_{s+t} \neq 0 and that, for no index k<s+tk < s + t, Δk\Delta_k and Δk+1\Delta_{k+1} are simultaneously zero (cf. § 6, exerc. 1 b)). Show that if Δk=0\Delta_k = 0 for some k<s+tk < s + t, Δk−1\Delta_{k-1} and Δk+1\Delta_{k+1} have opposite signs (method of exerc. 1 a) of § 6) and that the number s−ts - t is equal to

sgn⁡Δ1+sgn⁡(Δ1Δ2)+⋯+sgn⁡(Δs+t−1Δs+t) \operatorname{sgn} \Delta_1 + \operatorname{sgn} (\Delta_1 \Delta_2) + \cdots + \operatorname{sgn} (\Delta_{s+t-1} \Delta_{s+t})

(use exerc. 2 of § 6).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
