Algebra, chapter IX, § 7. Formes hermitiennes et corps ordonnés

We suppose that AA satisfies the conditions at the beginning of § 7 and that EE is of finite dimension nn. Let Φ\Phi be a non-degenerate positive hermitian form on EE. a) Now prove that every similitude for Φ\Phi can be written in one and only one way as the product of a homothety of ratio ⩾0\geqslant 0 in KK, and of a unitary transformation. b) For every basis (ai)1≤i≤n(a_i)_{1 \leq i \leq n} of EE, show that there exists one and only one orthonormal basis (ei)1≤i≤n(e_i)_{1 \leq i \leq n} of EE satisfying the following conditions: 1° for every mm such that 1≤m≤n1 \leq m \leq n, the subspace generated by a1,…,ama_1, \ldots, a_m is identical with the subspace generated by e1,…,eme_1, \ldots, e_m; 2° one has Φ(ai,ei)≥0\Phi(a_i, e_i) \geq 0 in KK, for every index ii (cf. § 6, no 1, prop. 1). c) Deduce from b) that for every invertible square matrix MM of order nn over AA, there exists one and only one pair of matrices (L,U)(L, U) of order nn, such that UU is a unitary matrix, that L=(λij)L = (\lambda_{ij}) has only zeros below its diagonal and diagonal terms λii\lambda_{ii} belonging to KK and >0> 0, and finally that M=LUM = LU.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
