Algebra, chapter IX, § 7. Formes hermitiennes et corps ordonnés

Suppose that the conditions of No. 3 are satisfied and in addition that A=K(i)A = K(i). Let uu be an endomorphism of EE.

a) The set of eigenvalues of uu is contained in the set UU of the values of Φ(x,u(x))\Phi(x, u(x)) when xx runs through the set of elements of EE such that Φ(x,x)=1\Phi(x, x) = 1.

b) A subset CC of A=K(i)A = K(i) is said to be convex if, for every pair of elements (ξ,η)∈C2(\xi, \eta) \in C^2 and every τ∈K\tau \in K such that 0⩽τ⩽10 \leqslant \tau \leqslant 1 one has τξ+(1−τ)η∈C\tau \xi + (1-\tau)\eta \in C. Show that the set UU is convex. (Reduce to the case where n=2n = 2; by writing uu in the form ν+iω\nu + i\omega, where ν\nu and ω\omega are hermitian, and by replacing if necessary uu by λu\lambda u, where λ∈A\lambda \in A and λλ‾=1\lambda \overline{\lambda} = 1, show that everything reduces to proving the following property. Let f(ξ1,ξ2)=ξ1ξ‾1+ξ2ξ‾2f(\xi_1, \xi_2) = \xi_1 \overline{\xi}_1 + \xi_2 \overline{\xi}_2, g(ξ1,ξ2)=aξ1ξ‾1+bξ2ξ‾2g(\xi_1, \xi_2) = a \xi_1 \overline{\xi}_1 + b \xi_2 \overline{\xi}_2 (a∈K,b∈Ka \in K, b \in K), h(ξ1,ξ2)=αξ1ξ‾1+βξ1ξ‾2+βξ2ξ‾1+γξ2ξ‾2h(\xi_1, \xi_2) = \alpha \xi_1 \overline{\xi}_1 + \beta \xi_1 \overline{\xi}_2 + \beta \xi_2 \overline{\xi}_1 + \gamma \xi_2 \overline{\xi}_2 (α∈K,γ∈K,β∈A\alpha \in K, \gamma \in K, \beta \in A); let (η1,η2)∈A2,(ζ1,ζ2)∈A2(\eta_1, \eta_2) \in A^2, (\zeta_1, \zeta_2) \in A^2 be such that f(η1,η2)=f(ζ1,ζ2)=1f(\eta_1, \eta_2) = f(\zeta_1, \zeta_2) = 1, g(η1,η2)=g(ζ1,ζ2)=1g(\eta_1, \eta_2) = g(\zeta_1, \zeta_2) = 1, h(η1,η2)>0h(\eta_1, \eta_2) > 0, h(ζ1,ζ2)<0h(\zeta_1, \zeta_2) < 0; there then exists (theta1,theta2)∈A2(theta_1, theta_2) \in A^2 such that f(θ1,θ2)=1f(\theta_1, \theta_2) = 1, g(θ1,θ2)=1g(\theta_1, \theta_2) = 1 and h(θ1,θ2)=0h(\theta_1, \theta_2) = 0. One will begin by observing that for every pair (ξ1,ξ2)(\xi_1, \xi_2), there exists μ∈A\mu \in A such that μμ‾=1\mu \overline{\mu} = 1 and βμξ1ξ‾2+βμξ2ξ‾1=0\beta \mu \xi_1 \overline{\xi}_2 + \beta \mu \xi_2 \overline{\xi}_1 = 0, which will make it possible to reduce to the case where β=0\beta = 0; use prop. 5 of Chap. VI, § 2, No. 5.)

c) Show that if uu is normal, UU is the smallest convex set containing all the eigenvalues of uu. Give an example where uu is not normal but where UU still has the preceding property. (Take as eigenvalues of uu the elements ±1±i\pm 1 \pm i as simple eigenvalues, and 0 as a double eigenvalue.)

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
