Algebra, chapter IX, § 7. Formes hermitiennes et corps ordonnés
The conditions of No. 3 are assumed to be satisfied.
a) For every endomorphism of , let be an orthonormal basis of formed by eigenvectors of , and let be the eigenvalue of corresponding to the vector ; put (square root of when is commutative); one has . If are two endomorphisms of , their matrices with respect to the same orthonormal basis of , show that for the matrix , with elements in , one has (observe that is positive hermitian for every ); deduce that . If in addition is commutative, one has
(write as a product by using Ex. 14 b)).
b) Suppose in addition that is commutative (thus equal to or ). If are two square matrices hermitian positive, now prove that one has (reduce to the case where is a diagonal matrix). Deduce that one has (notations of Exercise 17)
Conclude from these inequalities that for two arbitrary endomorphisms of , one has then .
c) Assuming still that is commutative, let be the decomposition into linear factors of the characteristic polynomial of an arbitrary endomorphism of ; now prove that one has and that, for the two members of this inequality to be equal, it is necessary and sufficient that be normal (use Exercise 12).
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
