Algebra, chapter IX, § 7. Formes hermitiennes et corps ordonnés

Suppose that the conditions of No. 3 are fulfilled. Let uu and vv be two endomorphisms of EE.

a) Suppose that uu and uvuv are normal. In order that vuvu be normal, it is necessary and sufficient that vv and u∗uu^*u be commutable. (To see that the condition is necessary, use the relation u(vu)=(uv)uu(vu) = (uv)u and exerc. 22; to see that it is sufficient, use exerc. 14 a) and 10 d).)

b) Suppose that u,vu, v and uvuv are normal; let β\beta be the greatest eigenvalue of uu∗uu^*, and let FF be the subspace of EE formed by the eigenvectors of uu∗uu^* corresponding to the eigenvalue β\beta. Now prove that v(F)⊂Fv(F) \subset F. (Remark that for every normal endomorphism uu and every x∈Ex \in E, one has

Φ(u(x),u(x))=Φ(u∗(x),u∗(x)). \Phi(u(x), u(x)) = \Phi(u^*(x), u^*(x)).
)

Reduce to the case where A is equal to K(i) or to the quaternion field over K; F then admits a basis formed by eigenvectors for u (and u*); remark that for such a vector z, one has Φ(u∗uv(z),v(z))=βΦ(v(z),v(z))\Phi(u^*u v(z), v(z)) = \beta \Phi(v(z), v(z)). Deduce that νu is normal (reason by induction on the number of distinct eigenvalues of u∗uu^*u). If h (resp. h′h') is the positive hermitian endomorphism such that h2=uu∗h^2 = uu^* (resp. h′2=νν∗{h'}^2 = \nu \nu^*) and if one sets u=hu1,ν=h′ν1u = hu_1, \nu = h'\nu_1, where u1u_1 and ν1\nu_1 are unitary, h permutable with u1u_1 and h′h' with ν1\nu_1 (exerc. 14 a)), prove that the pairs (h,h′),(h,ν1)(h, h'), (h, \nu_1) and (h′,u1)(h', u_1) are permutable; converse. Deduce that umνn,νnum,uν∗u^m \nu^n, \nu^n u^m, u \nu^* and ν∗u\nu^* u are then normal (mm and nn arbitrary integers >0> 0).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
