Algebra, chapter IX, § 9. Algèbres de Clifford

The Clifford algebra of QQ, denoted by C(Q)C(Q), is the quotient algebra of the tensor algebra T(E)T(E) of the module EE by the two-sided ideal (denoted by I(Q)I(Q)) generated by the elements of the form x⊗x−Q(x)⋅1x \otimes x - Q(x)\cdot 1 (x∈E)(x \in E).

We shall denote by ρQ\rho_Q (or simply by ρ\rho when there is no danger of confusion) the mapping of EE into C(Q)C(Q) composed of the canonical mapping of EE into T(E)T(E) and the canonical mapping σ\sigma of T(E)T(E) onto C(Q)C(Q); the mapping ρQ\rho_Q is said to be canonical. Let us note that C(Q)C(Q) is generated by ρQ(E)\rho_Q(E), and that, for x∈Ex \in E, we have

ρ(x)2=Q(x)⋅1; \rho(x)^2 = Q(x)\cdot 1;

whence, replacing xx by x+yx + y (x, yx,\ y in EE)

ρ(x)ρ(y)+ρ(y)ρ(x)=Φ(x, y)⋅1 \rho(x)\rho(y) + \rho(y)\rho(x) = \Phi(x,\ y)\cdot 1

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
