Algebra, chapter IX, § 9. Algèbres de Clifford

Suppose that AA is of characteristic ≠2\neq 2, and let (x1,…,xm)(x_1, \ldots, x_m) (m=2rm = 2r) be an orthogonal basis of EE. Put

z=2rx1…xm∈C(Q); z = 2^r x_1 \ldots x_m \in C(Q);
since xixj+xjxi=0x_i x_j + x_j x_i = 0 for i≠ji \neq j, we have zxj=−xjzzx_j = -x_j z, which entails that z belongs to the center ZZ of C+(Q)C^+(Q) without belonging to AA. We have
z2=22r(−1)rQ(x1)…Q(xm)=(−1)rD z^2 = 2^{2r}(-1)^r Q(x_1) \ldots Q(x_m) = (-1)^r D
where D denotes the discriminant of Φ\Phi with respect to the basis (xj)(x_j) (cf. exerc. 9).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
