Algebra, chapter IX, § 9. Algèbres de Clifford

Put, for s∈Gs \in G and x∈Ex \in E, φ(s).x=sxs−1\varphi(s).x = sx s^{-1}.

a) The mapping φ\varphi is a homomorphism of GG into the orthogonal group O(Q)O(Q) of QQ and its kernel is the set of invertible elements of the center ZZ of C(Q)C(Q).

b) The set E∩GE \cap G is the set of nonsingular vectors of EE; for x∈E∩Gx \in E \cap G, −φ(x)-\varphi(x) is the symmetry with respect to the hyperplane orthogonal to xx.

c) If dim⁡(E)\dim(E) is even, one has φ(G)=O(Q)\varphi(G) = O(Q), φ(G+)\varphi(G^+) is of index 2 in O(Q)O(Q) if E≠{0}E \neq \{0\}, and is equal to SO(Q)SO(Q) if AA is of characteristic ≠2\neq 2.

d) If dim⁡(E)\dim(E) is odd (which implies that AA is of characteristic ≠2\neq 2), one has φ(G)=φ(G+)=SO(Q)\varphi(G) = \varphi(G^+) = SO(Q).

Indeed, one has Q(sxs−1)=(sxs−1)2=sx2s−1=Q(x)Q(sxs^{-1}) = (sxs^{-1})^2 = sx^2 s^{-1} = Q(x) for s∈Gs \in G and x∈Ex \in E, which shows that φ(s)∈O(Q)\varphi(s) \in O(Q). For φ(s)=1\varphi(s) = 1 to hold, it is necessary and sufficient that ss commute with the elements of EE, that is to say, belong to the center ZZ of C(Q)C(Q). This proves a).

For an element xx of EE to belong to GG, it is necessary that it be invertible, that is to say, that it be a nonsingular vector (since x2=Q(x)x^2 = Q(x)). If this is so, one has x−1=Q(x)−1xx^{-1} = Q(x)^{-1} x, whence, for every y∈Ey \in E,

xyx−1=Q(x)−1xyx=Q(x)−1x(Φ(x,y)−xy)=−(y−Φ(x,y)Q(x)−1x); xy x^{-1} = Q(x)^{-1} xy x = Q(x)^{-1} x (\Phi(x, y) - xy) = - (y - \Phi(x, y) Q(x)^{-1} x);
this proves b) (§ 6, no 4).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
