Algebra, chapter X, § 3. Résolutions

Let CC be a complex and let r∈Zr\in \mathbf{Z}. There exists a complex C′C' and a homomorphism f:C′→Cf:C'\to C such that fn:Cn′→Cnf_n:C'_n\to C_n is an isomorphism for n<rn<r and such that Cr′C'_r is a free AA-module. If AA is noetherian and the AA-modules Hr(C)H_r(C) and Cr−1C_{r-1} are of finite type, one can require that Cr′C'_r be of finite type.

a) Let first h:M→Crh:M\to C_r be a homomorphism of AA-modules; let d=(dn)d=(d_n) denote the differential of CC. Let NN be the submodule of M×Cr+1M\times C_{r+1} formed by the pairs (m,x)(m,x) such that h(m)=dr+1(x)h(m)=d_{r+1}(x); define a complex (C′,d′)(C',d') by Cn′=CnC'_n=C_n for n≠r,r+1n\ne r,r+1, Cr′=MC'_r=M, Cr+1′=NC'_{r+1}=N, dn′=dnd'_n=d_n for n≠r,r+1n\ne r,r+1, dr′=hd'_r=h, dr+1′(m,x)=md'_{r+1}(m,x)=m for (m,x)∈N(m,x)\in N and dr+2′(y)=(0,dr+2(y))d'_{r+2}(y)=(0,d_{r+2}(y)) for y∈Cr+2y\in C_{r+2}. Also consider the morphism of complexes f:C′→Cf:C'\to C such that fn=1Cnf_n=1_{C_n} for n≠r,r+1n\ne r,r+1, fr=hf_r=h, fr+1(m,x)=xf_{r+1}(m,x)=x.

b) The complex Ker⁡f\operatorname{Ker}f is zero in degree ≠r,r+1\ne r,r+1 and the differential dr+1′d'_{r+1} induces an isomorphism of Ker⁡fr+1\operatorname{Ker}f_{r+1} onto Ker⁡fr\operatorname{Ker}f_r, hence H(Ker⁡f)=0H(\operatorname{Ker}f)=0.

c) When the composite mapping M→hCr→Cr/Br(C)M\xrightarrow{h}C_r\to C_r/B_r(C) is surjective, one sees analogously that H(Coker⁡f)=0H(\operatorname{Coker}f)=0, and ff is then a homomorphism (X, p. 31, cor. 2).

d) When AA is assumed noetherian and the AA-modules Hr(C)H_r(C) and Cr−1C_{r-1} are of finite type, then Cr/Br(C)C_r/B_r(C) is of finite type, by virtue of the exact sequence (X, p. 25)

0→Hr(C)→Cr/Br(C)→Cr−1 ; 0\to H_r(C)\to C_r/B_r(C)\to C_{r-1}\ ;

there then exists a free AA-module of finite type MM and a homomorphism h:M→Crh:M\to C_r such that the condition of c) is satisfied; in the general case, there exists a free module MM and a surjective homomorphism h:M→Crh:M\to C_r. This completes the proof.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
