Let M be an A-module and (P,p) a projective resolution of M. Let r denote the radical of A. Suppose either that Pn is a finitely generated A-module for every n, or that r is nilpotent. Then a necessary and sufficient condition for (P,p) to be minimal is that the complex (A/r)⊗AP have zero differential, in other words that
dn+1(Pn+1)⊂rPnfor all n≥0.
Suppose that (P,p) is minimal. By VIII, loc. cit., the homomorphism
1⊗δn:(A/r)⊗APn⟶(A/r)⊗AImdn
is an isomorphism. It then follows from the exact sequence
0⟶Imdn+1jnPnδnImdn⟶0
that the homomorphism 1⊗jn:(A/r)⊗AImdn+1→(A/r)⊗APn is zero; since dn+1=jn∘δn+1, we deduce that 1A/r⊗dn+1=0 for n⩾0.
Conversely, suppose that for every n⩾1, 1⊗dn is zero, in other words that Imdn=Kerdn−1 is contained in rPn−1. Since δn−1 is surjective, it follows from VIII, loc. cit. that δn−1 is a projective cover for n⩾1, hence that (P,p) is minimal.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
