Algebra, chapter X, § 4. Produits de torsion

Let C, C1C,\ C_1 be two complexes of right AA-modules, C′, C1′C',\ C'_1 two complexes of left AA-modules, and u:C→C1, v:C→C1, u′:C′→C1′, v′:C′→C1′u : C \to C_1,\ v : C \to C_1,\ u' : C' \to C'_1,\ v' : C' \to C'_1 be morphisms of complexes.

a) If uu and u′u' are homotopic to vv and v′v' respectively, then the two morphisms u⊗u′u \otimes u' and v⊗v′v \otimes v' from C⊗AC′C \otimes_A C' to C1⊗AC1′C_1 \otimes_A C'_1 are homotopic.

b) If uu and u′u' are homotopy equivalences, u⊗u′u \otimes u' is a homotopy equivalence.

c) If CC or C′C' is homotopic to zero, C⊗AC′C \otimes_A C' is homotopic to zero.

Let us denote by the same letter dd the differentials of the complexes C, C1, C′, C1′C,\ C_1,\ C',\ C'_1 and by DD the differentials of the complexes C⊗AC′C \otimes_A C' and C1⊗AC1′C_1 \otimes_A C'_1.

If uu (resp. u′u') is homotopic to vv (resp. v′v'), there exists a graded homomorphism of degree 1 s:C→C1s:C\to C_1 (resp. s′:C′→C1′s':C'\to C'_1) such that

(2)u−v=ds+sd(resp. u′−v′=ds′+s′d). (2)\qquad u-v=ds+sd\qquad\text{(resp. }u'-v'=ds'+s'd\text{)}.

Let S:C⊗AC′→C1⊗AC1′S:C\otimes_A C'\to C_1\otimes_A C'_1 be the unique graded homomorphism of degree 1 such that, for x∈Cp, y∈Cq′, p,q∈Zx\in C_p,\ y\in C'_q,\ p,q\in\mathbf Z, we have

(3)S(x⊗y)=s(x)⊗u′(y)+(−1)pv(x)⊗s′(y). (3)\qquad S(x\otimes y)=s(x)\otimes u'(y)+(-1)^p v(x)\otimes s'(y).

Then, with the previous notations:

(DS+SD)(x⊗y)=D(sx⊗u′y)+(−1)pD(vx⊗s′y)+S(dx⊗y)+(−1)pS(x⊗dy)==dsx⊗u′y+(−1)p+1sx⊗du′y+(−1)pdvx⊗s′y+vx⊗ds′y+sdx⊗u′y+(−1)p−1vdx⊗s′y+(−1)psx⊗u′dy+vx⊗s′dy=(ds+sd)(x)⊗u′y+vx⊗(ds′+s′d)(y)=(ux−vx)⊗u′y+vx⊗(u′y−v′y)=ux⊗u′y−vx⊗v′y. \begin{aligned} (DS+SD)(x\otimes y)&=D(sx\otimes u'y)+(-1)^pD(vx\otimes s'y)+S(dx\otimes y)\\ &\quad+(-1)^pS(x\otimes dy)=\\ &=dsx\otimes u'y+(-1)^{p+1}sx\otimes du'y+(-1)^pdvx\otimes s'y+vx\otimes ds'y\\ &\quad+sdx\otimes u'y+(-1)^{p-1}vdx\otimes s'y+(-1)^psx\otimes u'dy+vx\otimes s'dy\\ &=(ds+sd)(x)\otimes u'y+vx\otimes(ds'+s'd)(y)\\ &=(ux-vx)\otimes u'y+vx\otimes(u'y-v'y)=ux\otimes u'y-vx\otimes v'y. \end{aligned}

This gives DS+SD=u⊗u′−v⊗v′DS+SD=u\otimes u'-v\otimes v', whence a).

Let us prove b). If uu and u′u' are homotopy equivalences, there exist homomorphisms of complexes α:C1→C\alpha:C_1\to C and α′:C1′→C′\alpha':C'_1\to C' such that u∘α, α∘u′, α′∘u′u\circ\alpha,\ \alpha\circ u',\ \alpha'\circ u' are homotopic respectively to IdC1, IdC, IdC1′, IdC′\mathrm{Id}_{C_1},\ \mathrm{Id}_C,\ \mathrm{Id}_{C'_1},\ \mathrm{Id}_{C'}. Then (u⊗u′)∘(α⊗α′)(u\otimes u')\circ(\alpha\otimes\alpha'), which is equal to (u∘α)⊗(u′∘α′)(u\circ\alpha)\otimes(u'\circ\alpha'), is homotopic by a) to IdC1⊗IdC1′=IdC1⊗C1′\mathrm{Id}_{C_1}\otimes\mathrm{Id}_{C'_1}=\mathrm{Id}_{C_1\otimes C'_1}, while (α⊗α′)∘(u⊗u′)(\alpha\otimes\alpha')\circ(u\otimes u') is homotopic to IdC⊗C′\mathrm{Id}_{C\otimes C'}, whence b). Finally, c) follows from b) applied to the case where C1C_1 or C1′C'_1 is zero.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
