Algebra, chapter X, § 4. Produits de torsion

We will see below (X, p. 107, Proposition 6) finiteness properties of the modules Tor⁡A(M,N)\operatorname{Tor}^A(M, N). For example, if AA is commutative noetherian and if MM and NN are AA-modules of finite type, every AA-module Tor⁡nA(M,N)\operatorname{Tor}_n^A(M, N) is of finite type.

Let f:M→M′f : M \to M' be a homomorphism of right AA-modules and g:N→N′g : N \to N' a homomorphism of left AA-modules. We define Tor⁡A(f,g)=H(L(f)⊗AL(g))\operatorname{Tor}^A(f, g) = H(L(f) \otimes_A L(g)); this is a homomorphism of graded kk-modules

Tor⁡A(f,g):Tor⁡A(M,N)→Tor⁡A(M′,N′) \operatorname{Tor}^A(f, g) : \operatorname{Tor}^A(M, N) \to \operatorname{Tor}^A(M', N')

whose homogeneous components are denoted

Tor⁡nA(f,g):Tor⁡nA(M,N)→Tor⁡nA(M′,N′). \operatorname{Tor}_n^A(f, g) : \operatorname{Tor}_n^A(M, N) \to \operatorname{Tor}_n^A(M', N') .

According to Proposition 1 of X, p. 62, the canonical homomorphism

γ0,0:H0(L(M))⊗AH0(L(N))→H0(L(M)⊗AL(N)) \gamma_{0,0} : H_0(L(M)) \otimes_A H_0(L(N)) \to H_0(L(M) \otimes_A L(N))

is bijective; using the isomorphisms M→H0(L(M))M \to H_0(L(M)) and N→H0(L(N))N \to H_0(L(N)), we deduce from it an isomorphism, called canonical

(7)

γM,N:M⊗AN→Tor⁡0A(M,N). \gamma_{M,N} : M \otimes_A N \to \operatorname{Tor}_0^A(M, N) .

We will always identify Tor⁡0A(M,N)\operatorname{Tor}_0^A(M, N) with M⊗ANM \otimes_A N through this isomorphism. Hence the kk-linear map Tor⁡0A(f,g)\operatorname{Tor}_0^A(f, g) is identified with f⊗gf \otimes g.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
