Algebra, chapter X, § 7. Produit de composition

Let 0→N→fn−1Rn→fn⋯→R1→f1M→00 \to N \xrightarrow{f_{n-1}} R_n \xrightarrow{f_n} \cdots \to R_1 \xrightarrow{f_1} M \to 0 be an exact sequence, θ\theta its class in ExtAn(M,N)\mathrm{Ext}_A^n(M, N), u ⁣:M′→Mu \colon M' \to M and v ⁣:N→N′v \colon N \to N' homomorphisms of AA-modules.

a) The element v∘θv \circ \theta of ExtAn(M,N′)\mathrm{Ext}_A^n(M, N') is equal to the class of the exact sequence

0→N′→fn′+1Rn′→fn′Rn−1→fn−1⋯→R1→M→0, 0 \to N' \xrightarrow{f_{n'+1}} R'_n \xrightarrow{f_{n'}} R_{n-1} \xrightarrow{f_{n-1}} \cdots \to R_1 \to M \to 0 ,

where Rn′R'_n is the AA-quotient module of Rn⊕N′R_n \oplus N' by the submodule formed by the pairs (fn+1(x),−v(x))(f_{n+1}(x), -v(x)) for x∈Nx \in N, and where fn′+1′f_{n'+1}' (resp. fn′′f_{n'}') is deduced from the canonical injection (resp. from (fn,0)(f_n, 0)) by passing to quotients.

b) The element θ∘u\theta \circ u of ExtAn(M′,N)\mathrm{Ext}_A^n(M', N) is the class of the exact sequence

0→N→Rn→⋯→R2→f2′′R1′→f1′′M′→0, 0 \to N \to R_n \to \cdots \to R_2 \xrightarrow{f_2''} R'_1 \xrightarrow{f_1''} M' \to 0 ,

where R1′R'_1 is the fibre product R1×MM′R_1 \times_M M', that is to say (I, p. 44) the submodule of R1×M′R_1 \times M' formed by the pairs (x,y)(x, y) such that f1(x)=u(y)f_1(x) = u(y), and where f2′′f_2'' (resp. f1′′f_1'') is deduced from (f2,0)(f_2, 0) (resp. from the second projection).

Let us prove for example aa. Let zz be an element of Rn′R'_n such that fn′(z)=0f'_n(z) = 0; if zz is the class of a pair (x,y)(x, y), with x∈Rnx \in R_n, y∈N′y \in N', one has fn(x)=0f_n(x) = 0, so that there exists an element t∈Nt \in N such that x=fn+1(t)x = f_{n+1}(t). Then one has z=fn+1′(y+v(t))z = f'_{n+1}(y + v(t)), which proves that Ker fn′=Im fn+1′\mathrm{Ker}\ f'_n = \mathrm{Im}\ f'_{n+1}. The injectivity of fn+1′f'_{n+1} follows from that of fn+1f_{n+1}.

Let j:Rn→Rn′j : R_n \to R'_n be the homomorphism deduced from the canonical injection; one has a commutative diagram of exact sequences:

0⟶N→fn+1Rn→fnRn−1⟶…⟶M⟶0↓v↓j↓1↓10⟶N′→fn+1′Rn′→fn′Rn−1′⟶…⟶M⟶0; \begin{array}{ccccccccccccc} 0 & \longrightarrow & N & \xrightarrow{f_{n+1}} & R_n & \xrightarrow{f_n} & R_{n-1} & \longrightarrow & \ldots & \longrightarrow & M & \longrightarrow & 0 \\ & & \downarrow v & & \downarrow j & & \downarrow 1 & & & & \downarrow 1 & & \\ 0 & \longrightarrow & N' & \xrightarrow{f'_{n+1}} & R'_n & \xrightarrow{f'_n} & R'_{n-1} & \longrightarrow & \ldots & \longrightarrow & M & \longrightarrow & 0 ; \end{array}

assertion aa then follows from the proposition.

The proof of bb is analogous.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
