Functions of a Real Variable, chapter V, § 1. COMPARISON OF FUNCTIONS ON A FILTERED SET

1) The relation f≪1f \ll 1 means that ff tends to 0 along F\mathfrak{F}.

2) When α\alpha and β\beta are two real numbers such that α<β\alpha < \beta one has xα≪xβx^\alpha \ll x^\beta as xx tends to +∞+\infty. Similarly, when mm and nn are two rational integers such that m<nm < n one has zm≪znz^m \ll z^n as the complex number zz tends to ∞\infty.

3) As xx tends to +∞+\infty one has xn≪exx^n \ll e^x for every integer nn (III, p. 105).

4) In R2\mathbf{R}^2 one has, as (x,y)(x, y) tends to (0,0)(0, 0),

x2+y2≪∣x∣+∣y∣. x^2 + y^2 \ll |x| + |y|.

The following propositions can be deduced immediately from def. 3:

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
