General Topology, chapter IX, Appendix 1. Espaces de Lindelöf

Let XX be a topological space.

(i) If the topology of XX admits a countable base, XX is a Lindelöf space.

(ii) Let f:X→Yf : X \to Y be a continuous mapping from XX into a topological space YY (not necessarily separated). If XX is a Lindelöf space, the same is true of the subspace f(X)f(X) of YY.

(i) Let R\mathscr{R} be an open covering of XX, B\mathscr{B} a countable base of the topology of XX, B′\mathscr{B}' the set of elements A∈BA \in \mathscr{B} such that there exists an element of R\mathscr{R} containing AA; B′\mathscr{B}' is a countable covering of XX, since every x∈Xx \in X is contained in a set U∈RU \in \mathscr{R}, and there exists then A∈BA \in \mathscr{B} such that x∈A⊂Ux \in A \subset U. There then exists a mapping Φ\Phi from B′\mathscr{B}' into R\mathscr{R} such that one has A⊂Φ(A)A \subset \Phi(A) for every A∈B′A \in \mathscr{B}'; it is clear that Φ(B′)\Phi(\mathscr{B}') is a countable open covering of XX contained in R\mathscr{R}.

(ii) Let (Vλ)λ∈L(V_\lambda)_{\lambda \in L} be a family of open sets in YY forming a covering of f(X)f(X). The sets f−1(Vλ)f^{-1}(V_\lambda) then form an open covering of XX, and there exists consequently a countable subset JJ of LL such that the open sets f−1(Vλ)f^{-1}(V_\lambda) for λ∈J\lambda \in J form a covering of XX. But then the sets VλV_\lambda for λ∈J\lambda \in J form a covering of f(X)f(X), which proves that f(X)f(X) is a Lindelöf space.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
