General Topology, chapter IX, Appendix 1. Espaces de Lindelöf
Let be a topological space (not necessarily separated). The following properties are equivalent: a) Every open subspace of is a Lindelöf space. b) Every set of lower (resp. upper) semicontinuous functions in contains a countable subset which admits the same upper (resp. lower) envelope.
Let us first show that b) implies a). Let be an open subspace of , and let be a family of open sets in (hence in ) covering . The functions being lower semicontinuous in , there exists a countable subset of such that the family has the same upper envelope as the family . Consequently, , and is a Lindelöf space.
Let us now prove that a) implies b). Let be a set of lower semicontinuous functions in , and let be the upper envelope of . Let be a countable dense subset of . For every function and every number , let be the open set of the such that (IV, p. 29). By assumption, there exists a countable subset of such that
Let , and denote by the upper envelope of . We obviously have ; on the other hand, let be a point of , and let be an element of such that ; there exists a function such that ; hence , and there exists a function such that . Consequently, we also have , whence the inequality , and finally . Since is countable, the assertion is established for lower semi-continuous functions; the case of upper semi-continuous functions is reduced to it by changing the sign.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
