Commutative Algebra, IX, p. 72
Let k be a field of characteristic p, (ξλ)λ∈Λ a p-basis of k, C the Cohen subring of W(k) containing τ(ξλ) for all λ∈Λ. Let (εj)j∈J be a basis of k∗/(k∗p) as an Fp-vector space. Let n be an integer ⩾0 and (xj)j∈J a family of elements of k∗ such that the image of xj in k∗/k∗p is εj, for all j∈J. a) The group k∗/k∗pn is a free (Z/pnZ)-module with basis (xj)j∈J, where xj is the class of xj in k∗/k∗pn. b) For each j∈J, let us write the decomposition of xj with respect to the basis (ξm)m∈Mn of k over kpn (with the notation of Exercise 3, p. 69):
xj=m∈Mn∑aj,mpnξm,aj,m∈k.
Put
σn(xj)=m∈Mn∑τ(aj,mpnξm)for all j∈J
and
σn(x)=τ(x)for x∈k∗pn.
Then σn extends, in a unique way, to a multiplicative mapping of k∗ into C/pn+1C, again denoted by σn, and which, on passing to the quotient, determines the inclusion of k∗ into k=C/pC. c) Let σn′ be another multiplicative mapping of k∗ into C/pn+1C defining the inclusion of k∗ into k on passing to the quotient. Then for all x∈k∗, we have σn(x)=v(x)σn′(x), where v is a homomorphism of k∗ into the multiplicative group (1+pC)/(1+pn+1C) trivial on k∗pn. Any family (βj)j∈J of elements of C/pnC defines such a homomorphism by the formula
v(xj)=1+pβjfor all j∈J.
d) For every integer n⩾0 and every multiplicative mapping sn:k∗→C/pn+1C defining the inclusion of k∗ into k on passing to the quotient, there exists a multiplicative mapping sn+1:k∗→C/pn+2C which determines sn on passing to the quotient. e) Prove that there exists a multiplicative section s:k→C. One may require s to satisfy s(ξλ)=τ(ξλ) for all λ∈Λ. f) Let A be a local ring, separated and complete. Let k be its residue field, (ξλ)λ∈Λ a p-basis of k, and for λ∈Λ, let aλ be a lifting of ξλ in A. Now prove that there exists a multiplicative section k∗→A satisfying s(ξλ)=aλ.
