Commutative Algebra, IX, p. 70
Let A be a ring and let (Jn)n∈N be a decreasing sequence of ideals of A, satisfying pJn+Jnp⊂Jn+1 for every integer n⩾0. Let R be a ring of characteristic p and let φ be a ring homomorphism of R into A/J0. A lifting of φ to A/Jn is by definition a mapping φn:R→A/Jn such that φn(xp)=φn(x)p for x∈R, and which yields φ again by passing to the quotient. a) Let φn,φ~n be two liftings of φ to A/Jn. Then φn and φ~n coincide on Rpn. b) If R is perfect, there exists a unique lifting φn of φ to A/Jn. One has φn(1)=1 and φn(xy)=φn(x)φn(y) for x,y∈R.
