Exercise 8, § 3
Commutative Algebra, VII
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be an integral ring, three non-zero elements of A, where x is extremal and . Let S be the multiplicative set of the (), and let ; we consider the rings of formal series and .
(a) Let be three integers such that and . We consider in the element . Now prove that there exists an integer and a series
(b) Suppose that . Now prove that there exists no formal series in the ring having constant term ( integer ) and which is an associated element to in (calculate the coefficient of in the product of and an invertible element of ).
(c) Deduce from a), b) and exerc. 7 an example of a factorial ring such that the ring of formal series is not factorial. (With the preceding notations, and supposing the conditions of a) and b) on fulfilled, now prove that cannot be a product of extremal factors () in ; one will observe that the are formal series whose constant terms are powers of . Consider next the ring , where is formed of the series whose constant term is in ; is the completion of the Zariski ring ; now prove that , and that and the are extremal in ; obtain finally a contradiction with b)).
(d) Deduce from c) an example of a local factorial noetherian ring whose completion is a Krull ring which is not factorial.
