Let A be the ring Z[X], where X=(Xi)i∈I is a finite family of indeterminates. Let J be an ideal of A generated by monomials. a) Let i∈I; let P1,…,Pr;Q1,…,Qs be monomials generating J, where the Pj are divisible by Xi whereas the Qk are not. Prove that the transporter J:Xi (ideal of A formed by the elements P such that XiP∈J) is generated by the monomials Xi−1P1,…,Xi−1Pr;Q1,…,Qs. b) Deduce that if J:Xi is equal to J or A for every i∈I, J is the ideal generated by the variables Xi which belong to J. c) Let M be an A-module, and let p be an integer. Suppose that TorpA(A/J′,M) (resp. ExtAp(A/J′,M)) is zero for every ideal J′ containing J and generated by certain of the Xi. Prove that TorpA(A/J,M) (resp. ExtAp(A/J,M)) is zero (let J′ be an ideal containing J, generated by monomials, such that TorpA(A/J′,M)=0, and maximal for these properties; deduce from the exact sequence
0→A/(J′:Xi)⟶A/J′⟶A/(J′+AXi)→0
and from b) that J′ is generated by the elements Xi which it contains, which contradicts the assumption). d) Deduce the inequality dpA(A/J)⩽Card(I). e) Let A be a ring, x=(xi)i∈I a finite family of elements of A; suppose that for every subset I′ of I the family (xi)i∈I′ is completely secant for A. Let J be an ideal of A generated by elements xα, where α runs through a finite subset F of NI. Prove the inequality dpA(A/J)⩽Card(I) (let J0 be the ideal of the ring A0=Z[(Xi)i∈I] generated by the Xα for α∈F; deduce from c) that TorpA0(A0/J0,A) is zero, and conclude by considering a projective resolution of the A0-module A0/J0 of length ⩽n).
