Exercise 7, § 4
Commutative Algebra, X
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be a regular local ring of dimension 3, a nonzero element of . Prove that the following conditions are equivalent:
(i) the ring is not factorial; (ii) there exists an integer and a matrix , with elements in , such that .
(Under assumption (ii), prove that the ideal of generated by the classes of the minors of , where is obtained by deleting the first row and the column of index , has height 1 but is not principal. Under assumption (i), let be a prime ideal of height 2 of whose image in is not principal; deduce from Exercise 11 of § 3 that is generated by the minors of order of a matrix with elements in . Write as the determinant of a matrix obtained by adding a column to ; if an element of is invertible reduce to the case where belongs to the canonical basis of .)
