Let G1,G2 be two groups, G a subgroup of G1×G2 such that pr1G=G1, pr2G=G2; identifying G1 and G2 with G1×{e2} and {e1}×G2 respectively, H1=G∩G1 and H2=G∩G2 are normal subgroups of G such that G/H1 is isomorphic to G2 and G/H2 is isomorphic to G1. (a) Prove that for G to be normal in G1×G2, it is necessary and sufficient that G contain the commutator group D(G1×G2)=D(G1)×D(G2) (prove that G contains D(G1) by writing that xzx−1z−1∈G for x∈G1 and z∈G). Deduce that G1/H1 is commutative. (b) If G is normal in G1×G2, prove that one defines a homomorphism of G1×G2 onto G1/H1 by making correspond to every pair (s1,s2) the class of s1t1−1 modulo H1, where t1∈G1 is such that (t1,s2)∈G. Deduce that (G1×G2)/G is isomorphic to G/(H1×H2).
