Let G1,G2G_1, G_2 be two groups and GG a subgroup of G1×G2G_1 \times G_2 such that pr1G=G1,pr2G=G2\mathrm{pr}_1 G = G_1, \mathrm{pr}_2 G = G_2; identifying G1G_1 and G2G_2 with G1×{e2}G_1 \times \{e_2\} and {e1}×G2\{e_1\} \times G_2 respectively, H1=G∩G1H_1 = G \cap G_1 and H2=G∩G2H_2 = G \cap G_2 are normal subgroups of GG such that G/H1G/H_1 is isomorphic to G2G_2 and G/H2G/H_2 isomorphic to G1G_1.

(a) Show that for GG to be normal in G1×G2G_1 \times G_2, it is necessary and sufficient that GG contain the commutator group D(G1×G2)=D(G1)×D(G2)D(G_1 \times G_2) = D(G_1) \times D(G_2) (prove that GG contains D(G1)D(G_1) by writing xzx−1z−1∈Gxzx^{-1}z^{-1} \in G for x∈G1x \in G_1 and z∈Gz \in G). Deduce that G1/H1G_1/H_1 is commutative.

(b) If GG is normal in G1×G2G_1 \times G_2, show that a homomorphism is defined of G1×G2G_1 \times G_2 onto G1/H1G_1/H_1 by associating with each ordered pair (s1,s2)(s_1, s_2) the coset of s1t1−1s_1 t_1^{-1} modulo H1H_1, where t1∈G1t_1 \in G_1 is such that (t1,s2)∈G(t_1, s_2) \in G. Deduce that (G1×G2)/G(G_1 \times G_2)/G is isomorphic to G/(H1×H2)G/(H_1 \times H_2).
