Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be a projective plane over a field , a bijective mapping of onto itself, obtained by passing to quotients from a bijective semilinear mapping of onto itself, relative to an automorphism of . a) Prove that the following four properties are equivalent: for every , , and are on a straight line; every right of contains a point invariant under ; through every point of passes a right invariant under ; for every right of , the three rights , and have a common point. (Prove first that ) and are equivalent; deduce, by duality (II, p. 203, Exercise 12), that and are equivalent; prove finally that implies and deduce by duality that implies .) b) Suppose that has the properties stated in a). Prove that if there exists in a right invariant under and containing only one point invariant under , is obtained by passing to quotients from a transvection of (II, p. 206, Exercise 11). (Prove that every right invariant under contains ; by considering a right not passing through , prove that there exists a right passing through and containing at least two points invariant under ; conclude that all points of are necessarily invariant under .) c) Suppose that has the properties stated in a). Prove that if there exists in a right invariant under and containing only two points invariant under , is obtained by passing to quotients from a dilation of (II, p. 206, Exercise 11). (If , are the two points of invariant under , prove that every right invariant under passes through or through ; then observe that there exist at least two other points , distinct from , and invariant under , and consequently that the right passes through or ; conclude by proving that all points of are invariant under .) d) Suppose that has the properties stated in a) and that every right of invariant under contains at least three distinct points invariant under ; there then exists in a projective frame (II, p. 202, Exercise 10) each point of which is invariant under ; conclude that there exists a basis of such that is obtained by passing to quotients from a semilinear mapping of onto itself such that for . The set of points of invariant under is then the projective plane , where is the vector space over the field of the invariants of , generated by , , . e) Suppose henceforth that satisfies the conditions of a) and d), and that neither nor is the identity. Prove that there exists such that and
