Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let E=P(V)E = \mathbf{P}(V) be a projective plane over a field KK and uu a bijective mapping of EE onto itself, arising when passing to the quotients from a bijective semi-linear mapping vv of VV onto itself, relative to an automorphism σ\sigma of KK.

(a) Show that the four following properties are equivalent: (α\alpha) for all x∈Ex \in E, x,u(x)x, u(x) and u2(x)u^2(x) lie on a straight line; (β\beta) every line of EE contains a point invariant under uu; (γ\gamma) through every point of EE there passes a line invariant under uu; (δ\delta) for every line DD of EE, the three line D,u(D)D, u(D) and u2(D)u^2(D) have a common point. (Show first that (α\alpha) and (γ\gamma) are equivalent; deduce by duality (Exercise 12) that (β\beta) and (δ\delta) are equivalent; prove finally that (γ\gamma) implies (β\beta) and deduce by duality that (β\beta) implies (γ\gamma).)

(b) Suppose that uu has the properties stated in (a). Show that if there exists in EE a line DD invariant under uu and containing only a single point invariant under uu, uu arises from a transvection vv of VV when passing to the quotients (§10§ 10, Exercise 11). (Show that every line invariant under uu contains aa; by considering a line not passing through aa, show that there exists a line D0D_0 passing through aa and containing at least two points invariant under uu; conclude that all the points of D0D_0 are necessarily invariant under uu.)

(c) Suppose that uu has the properties stated in (a). Show that if there exists in EE a line EE invariant under uu and containing only two points invariant under uu, uu arises from a dilatation vv of VV when passing to the quotients (§10§ 10, Exercise 11). (If a,ba, b are the two points of DD invariant under uu, show that every line invariant under uu passes through aa or through bb; then note that there exist at least two other points c,dc, d distinct from a,ba, b and invariant under uu and therefore the line DcdD_{cd} passes through aa or bb; conclude by proving that all the points of DcdD_{cd} are invariant under uu.)

(d) Suppose that uu has the properties stated in (a) and that every line of EE invariant under uu contains at least three distinct points invariant under uu; then there exists in EE a projective basis (Exercise 10) each point of which is invariant under uu; conclude that there exists a basis (ei)1≤i≤3(e_i)_{1 \leq i \leq 3} of VV such that uu arises from a semi-linear mapping vv of VV into itself such that v(ei)=eiv(e_i) = e_i for 1≤i≤31 \leq i \leq 3, when passing to the quotients. The set of points of EE invariant under uu is then the projective plane P(V0)\mathbf{P}(V_0), where V0V_0 is the vector space over the field K0K_0 of invariants of σ\sigma, generated by e1,e2,e3e_1, e_2, e_3.

(e) Suppose henceforth that uu satisfies the conditions of (a) and (d) and that neither uu nor u2u^2 is the identity. Show that there exists γ∈K\gamma \in K such that γσ=γ\gamma^\sigma = \gamma and

(1)

(ξσ−ξ)σ=γ(ξσ−ξ) (\xi^\sigma - \xi)^\sigma = \gamma (\xi^\sigma - \xi)
for all ξ∈K\xi \in K (use conditions (α\alpha) of (a) and the existence of ζ∈K\zeta \in K such that ζσ≠ζ\zeta^\sigma \neq \zeta). Show that γ≠−1\gamma \neq -1 and that, for all ξ∈K\xi \in K such that ξσ≠ξ\xi^\sigma \neq \xi,

(2)

(1+γ)ξσγ=γξ(1+γ) (1 + \gamma) \xi^\sigma \gamma = \gamma \xi (1 + \gamma)
(apply (1) replacing ξ\xi by ξ2\xi^2); extend (2) to all ξ∈K\xi \in K by noting that ξ=η−ζ\xi = \eta - \zeta, where ησ≠η\eta^\sigma \neq \eta and ξσ≠ζ\xi^\sigma \neq \zeta. Conclude that γ≠1\gamma \neq 1, then deduce from (1) and (2) that

(3)

ξσ=(1+γ)ξ(1+γ)−1 \xi^\sigma = (1 + \gamma) \xi (1 + \gamma)^{-1}
for all ξ∈K\xi \in K and that γ+γ−1\gamma + \gamma^{-1} belongs to the centre of KK. Obtain the converse.

Give an example where γ\gamma does not belong to the centre of KK, but where γ+γ−1\gamma + \gamma^{-1} is in this centre.
