Exercise 6, § 3
Topological Vector Spaces, IV, p. 59
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
(a) Let be a (DF) space (IV, p. 58, exerc. 2), a convex set such that for every bounded, convex and balanced subset of , is a neighbourhood of 0 for the topology induced on by that of . Now prove that is a neighbourhood of 0 in . (Let be a countable basis of the canonical bornology of (III, p. 3, déf. 5). Now prove that one can define by recurrence a sequence of numbers and a sequence of neighbourhoods of 0 in , convex, balanced and closed, such that , , whatever n may be. Now prove first that if the and are determined for , one can find such that and for . Prove then that one can find such that for and ; for this purpose, denoting by A the convex hull of the for , show that one can take for a suitable convex balanced neighbourhood V of 0; one will note for this purpose that it suffices to show that, if , 0 is not adherent to the set (b) Deduce from a) that if is a linear mapping from into a locally convex space , such that the restriction of to every bounded subset of is continuous, then is continuous (cf. IV, p. 50, exerc. 15).
