Topological Vector Spaces, V, p. 63
Let E be a real normed space, of dimension . Suppose that there exists a bijective decreasing mapping of the set of closed vector subspaces of E onto itself, such that and for every . (a) Prove that there exists a linear mapping of E onto its dual uniquely determined up to a scalar factor and such that for every . (By considering the case where M has dimension 1, apply the fundamental theorem of projective geometry (A, II, p. 203, exerc. 16), noting that the only automorphism of the field is the identity (TG, IV, p. 52, exerc. 3 of § 3).) (b) If one puts , prove that for every and that the relations and are equivalent. Deduce that for every couple of points of E (consider a number such that ). (c) Prove that keeps a constant sign in the set of all ; replacing by if necessary, one can therefore suppose that is a positive separating symmetric bilinear form on . (d) Let be the initial topology of E. Prove that the topology on E, defined by the norm , is finer than the topology (notice that the dual of E for contains the dual of E for ). (e) Prove that is a continuous mapping of E onto its dual , for the topologies and . Deduce that if E is complete for the initial topology , is continuous for and for the strong topology (notice that transforms every bounded set for into a bounded set for ). Deduce that the topologies and are then identical, and that is the orthogonal supplement of M for the Hilbert space structure defined on E by the form (cf. I, p. 17, th. 1). (f) Prove that in the space , endowed with the norm induced by that of , there exists a bijective mapping of onto itself, having the properties stated above (IV, p. 47, exerc. 1).
