Topological Vector Spaces, V, p. 64
It is set in small type as supplementary.
Let E be a real normed space of dimension . Suppose that there exists a decreasing bijective mapping from the set of closed vector subspaces of E onto itself, such that and for every . a) Show that there exists a linear mapping from E onto its dual defined upto a scalar factor and such that for all . (Considering the case where M is 1 dimensional, apply the fundamental th. of projective geometry (A, II, § 9, exerc. 16) by observing that the only automorphism of the field is the identity mapping (GT, IV, § 3, exerc. 3). b) If we put , show that for all and that the relations and are equivalent. Deduce that for every pair of points of E (consider a number such that ). c) Show that has the same sign on the set of all ; replacing by if necessary, we can then assume that is a positive, separating symmetric bilinear form on . d) Let be the initial topology of E. Show that the topology on E, defined by the norm is finer than the topology (observe that the dual of E for contains the dual of E for ). e) Show that is a continuous mapping from E onto its dual , for the topologies and . Deduce that if E is complete for the initial topology , then is continuous for and for the strong topology (observe that transforms every set bounded for into a bounded set for ). Deduce that then the topologies and are identical, and is the orthogonal complement of for the hilbertian space structure defined on by the form (cf. I, p. 17, th. 1). f) Show that in the space , with the norm induced by that of assigned to it, there exists a bijective mapping from onto itself, having the properties mentioned above (IV, p. 47, exerc. 1).
