Algebraic Topology, II, p. 226
Let be a set, a subset of and a mapping. We make the following hypotheses:
(i) The mappings from C into given by and are injective ;
(ii) If are such that the pairs and belong to C, then the pairs and belong to C and one has ;
(iii) For every , there exist elements and , necessarily unique by virtue of (i), such that the pairs , , , belong to C and such that one has and .
a) Prove that, for every , one has and . Deduce that and and . Also prove that
b) Let S be the set of elements of F such that and ; let and denote the mappings from F into S given by and .
Prove that the quadruplet is a quiver and that the mapping is a composition law in Γ which makes it a groupoid. (This construction is due to H. Brandt ; cf. « Über eine Verallgemeinerung des Gruppenbegriffes », Mathematische Annalen (1926), vol. 96, p. 360–366.)
