Algebraic Topology, IV, p. 455
Let X be a topological space and let be a point of X.
Let be a category of coverings of X and a category of sets (cf. II, p. 160, example 2).
(a) Suppose that for every covering E of X which is an object of , the fibre of E at is an object of ; we then put . For every morphism of coverings of B which are objects of , we denote by the mapping from into deduced from by passing to subsets. Prove that is a functor from the category into the category .
(b) Let be the set of families where, for every object E of , is a permutation of the set such that for every arrow of , one has (« automorphisms of the functor ».)
The relation given by for equips the set with a group structure. For every object E of , we denote by the set of the such that Id; it is a subgroup of .
(c) Prove that there exists a unique topological group structure on for which the groups form a basis of neighbourhoods of the identity element.
(d) Let T be a simply connected subspace of X. If are points of T, the topological groups and are isomorphic.
(e) Prove that the lifting of paths defines a continuous group homomorphism from to . This homomorphism is not necessarily surjective (exerc. 1 ; I, p. 146, exerc. 6) nor injective (exerc. 2). It is an isomorphism if X is path-connected and if every connected covering of X is isomorphic to an object of .
