Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest, it is set in small type as supplementary.
Let be the projective system of compact groups such that for every , and is the continuous homomorphism of onto itself, for , being a given prime number. The topological group is called the -adic solenoid; it is a compact connected commutative group.
a) For every , the continuous homomorphism is surjective and its kernel is isomorphic to the group of -adic integers (cf. III, p. 85, exerc. 1 a)).
b) Let be the canonical homomorphism . For every , put ; now prove that is a continuous injective homomorphism of into , and that is a everywhere dense subgroup of .
c) Let I be an open interval in , of center 0 and of length < 1 ; now prove that in , the subspace is homeomorphic to the product . In particular, the group is not locally connected. d) Now prove that every closed subgroup H of distinct from and from , is totally discontinuous and isomorphic to a group of the form or , where n is an integer prime to (use the prop. 3 of III, p. 62). e) Now prove that is a compact connected indecomposable space, that is to say that there does not exist a covering of formed by two compact connected sets P, Q distinct from . (Observe that there exists an integer n such that and , and examine the sets and to obtain a contradiction.)*
