General Topology, III
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest, it is set in small type as supplementary.
Let be the inverse system of compact groups such that for each , and is the continuous homomorphism of onto itself, for ( being a given prime number). The topological group is called the -adic solenoid; it is a compact connected commutative topological group.
a) For each , the continuous homomorphism is surjective, and its kernel is isomorphic to the group of -adic integers [cf. Exercise 1 a)].
b) Let be the canonical homomorphism . For each , put ; show that is an injective continuous homomorphism of into , and that is a dense subgroup of .
c) Let be an open interval in , with centre and length . Show that the subspace of is homeomorphic to the product . In particular, the group is not locally connected.
d) Show that every closed subgroup of , other than or , is totally disconnected and isomorphic to a group of the form or , where is an integer prime to (use Proposition 3 of no. 3).
e) Show that is an indecomposable compact connected space, i.e. that cannot be covered by two compact connected sets neither of which is equal to . (Observe that there is an integer such that and , and examine the sets and to get a contradiction). \*
