Exercise 15, § 4
General Topology, X, p. 58
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let be a completely regular space, its Stone-Čech compactification; equip the ring with the topology defined in exerc. 14. For every , let be the closure in of the subset of . For every subset of , denote by the intersection of the for . For every subset of , denote by the set of the such that ; we shall write instead of . In order that , it is necessary and sufficient that be invertible in . a) If are two functions of such that , now prove that one has also (consider the bounded continuous function ). Deduce that, for every subset of , one has , where is the ideal generated by in . b) Now prove that for every subset of , is an ideal of (use ), and that one has (closure of in ). c) Let be a function of such that for every , a function of . Now prove that there exists such that and that is a neighbourhood of . (Now prove that the function equal to if , to if , to 0 elsewhere, answers the question; one will consider the function and use ). d) Let be an ideal of ; now prove that if is such that is a neighbourhood of , one has . (First remark that there exists such that is contained in the interior of , then consider the function defined in , equal to if , to 0 if . e) Deduce from c) and d) that for every ideal of , . (One will first prove that for every subset of , , by reasoning by contradiction). Deduce that for every subset of , is a closed ideal of (remark that ). f) Conclude from e) that is a bijection of onto the set of maximal ideals (necessarily closed) of . For an ideal of to be closed, it is necessary and sufficient that it be an intersection of maximal ideals. The ring is without radical.
