General Topology, X

Let XX be a completely regular space and let βX\beta X be its Stone-Čech compactification. Endow the ring A=C(X;R)A = \mathscr{C}(X; \mathbf{R}) with the topology T\mathscr{T} defined in Exercise 14. For each f∈Af \in A, let V(f)V(f) be the closure in βX\beta X of the subset f‾(0)\overline{f}(0) of XX. For each subset MM of AA, let V(M)V(M) denote ⋂f∈MV(f)\bigcap_{f \in M} V(f). For each subset YY of βX\beta X, let J(Y)\mathfrak{J}(Y) denote the set of all f∈Af \in A such that Y⊂V(f)Y \subset V(f), and write J(x)\mathfrak{J}(x) in place of J({x})\mathfrak{J}(\{x\}). We have V(f)=∅V(f) = \varnothing if and only if ff is a unit in AA.

a) If f,gf, g are two elements of AA such that f‾(0)∩g‾(0)=∅\overline{f}(0) \cap \overline{g}(0) = \varnothing, show that V(f)∩V(g)=∅V(f) \cap V(g) = \varnothing. [Consider the function ∣f∣/(∣f∣+∣g∣)|f|/(|f| + |g|). Deduce that, for each subset MM of AA, we have V(M)=V(a)V(M) = V(a), where aa is the ideal generated by MM in A′A'.

b) Show that, for each subset YY of βX\beta X, J(Y)\mathfrak{J}(Y) is an ideal of AA [use a)] and that V(J(Y))V(\mathfrak{J}(Y)) is the closure Y‾\overline{Y} of YY in βX\beta X.

c) Let u∈Au \in A be such that u(x)>0u(x) > 0 for all x∈Xx \in X, and let g∈Ag \in A. Show that there exists f∈Af \in A such that ∣f−g∣≤u|f - g| \leq u and such that V(f)V(f) is a neighbourhood of V(g)V(g). [Define ff to be equal to g+ug + u if g(x)+u(x)<0g(x) + u(x) < 0, to g−ug - u if g(x)−u(x)>0g(x) - u(x) > 0, and to 0 otherwise; consider the function f′=inf⁡((u+g)+,(u−g)−)f' = \inf((u + g)^+, (u - g)^-) and use a).]

d) Let aa be an ideal of AA. Show that if f∈Af \in A is such that V(f)V(f) is a neighbourhood of V(a)V(a), then f∈af \in a. [Note first that there exists g∈ag \in a such that V(g)V(g) is contained in the interior of V(f)V(f), and then consider the function hh defined on XX which is equal to f(x)/g(x)f(x)/g(x) if f(x)≠0f(x) \neq 0, and equal to 00 if f(x)=0f(x) = 0.]

e) Deduce from c) and d) that J(V(a))=a‾\mathfrak{J}(V(a)) = \overline{a} for every ideal aa of AA. [Show first that V(M)=V(M‾)V(M) = V(\overline{M}) for all subsets MM of AA, arguing by contradiction.] Deduce that, for each subset YY of βX\beta X, J(Y)\mathfrak{J}(Y) is a closed ideal of AA. [Note that J(Y)=J(V(J(Y)))\mathfrak{J}(Y) = \mathfrak{J}(V(\mathfrak{J}(Y))).]

f) Use e) to show that x→J(x)x \to \mathfrak{J}(x) is a bijection of βX\beta X onto the set of maximal ideals (necessarily closed) of AA. An ideal of AA is closed if and only if it is an intersection of maximal ideals. The ring AA has no radical.
