We revert to the notation of the preceding exercise. Suppose that is a Gelfand pair.
One says that is a K-spherical function if the mapping
is a nonzero character of the algebra .
a) Let . Prove that the following conditions are equivalent :
(i) The function is a K-spherical function ;
(ii) For all and in G, one has
;
(iii) One has and for every function , there exists such that .
b) Let denote the space of the such that for every . It is a Banach subalgebra of the involutive Banach algebra ; it is commutative.
c) The algebra is identified with a dense subalgebra of . d) The mapping which to associates the linear form
on defines a bijection of the space of bounded K-spherical functions on G onto the space of nonzero characters of . (Note that every character of is continuous and of norm , cf. prop. 2 of I, p. 104.)
