Exercise 14, § 4

Commutative Algebra, II, 143

Let AA be a ring, X=Spec⁡(A)X = \operatorname{Spec}(A) its spectrum and PP the set of minimal prime ideals of AA.

(a) Let R{p,p′}R \{ p, p' \} be the symmetric and reflexive relation: "there exists a prime ideal pp of AA containing p+p′p + p'" between the elements p,p′p, p' of PP; let SS be the equivalence relation whose graph is the smallest of the graphs of equivalences containing the graph of RR (Set Theory, Chapter II, § 6, Exercise 10). Show that, if II is an equivalence class with respect to SS, the set VI=⋃p∈IV(p)V_I = \bigcup_{p \in I} V(p) is connected.

(b) Show that, if PP is finite (and in particular if AA is Noetherian), the VIV_I are the connected components of XX. Does this result extend to the case where PP is infinite (cf. Exercise 12)?
