Exercise 15, § 4

Commutative Algebra, II, 143

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let AA be a ring and aa a finitely generated ideal of AA. Show that the following properties are equivalent: (aa) a2=aa^2 = a; (β\beta) AA is generated by an idempotent; (y) V(a)V(a) is both open and closed in X=Spec⁡(A)X = \operatorname{Spec}(A) and aa is minimal among the ideals bb such that r(b)=r(a)r(b) = r(a) (use § 2, Corollary 3 to Proposition 4). Give an example where a2=aa^2 = a, aa is not finitely generated and does not contain an idempotent (cf. § 2, Exercise 15).
